A good winter in Milford on Sea depends less on tourists than on the village itself. Many people who live here have family elsewhere, and those families come to stay. Add the walkers and birdwatchers who prefer the coast out of season, and a well-prepared house can earn through months when the beach huts are shut. This is our winter let management service for Milford: weekends, Christmas and stays of a week to a few months.
Why people come in the cold months
To see family. Visits to parents and grandparents peak at Christmas, but they also follow hospital stays, house moves and new arrivals. Guests want to be within a walk or a short drive of the person they are visiting, which a village house gives them and a hotel does not.
For the marshes and the spit. The Lymington and Keyhaven Marshes reserve holds wintering brent geese, wigeon, pintail and waders. Keyhaven is under a mile from the green, and the shingle of Hurst Spit leads out towards the castle and the Needles.
For the view itself. Couples book a seafront flat or a clifftop bungalow to watch the weather come across the Solent.
To work quietly. Remote workers take a month by the sea, provided the broadband holds up. Ask us to check the connection at your address before we market a long stay.
Getting a Milford property ready
The village faces the sea, and the wind finds every gap. Before November:
- service the boiler and bleed the radiators;
- check window seals and doors on the seaward side;
- put a drying rack and a boot tray by the door, because the sea wall walk is muddy and salty;
- confirm the parking, since nearly every winter guest arrives by car;
- if the house has steps, say so, and photograph the ground-floor bedroom if there is one, because older visitors and their families look for it.
Winter pricing, week by week
Christmas and New Year are sold first and priced as the peak they are. Weekends in November, February and March are priced for couples. Weeks in January and early February are hardest to fill with short breaks, so we offer weekly and monthly stays at a rate that reflects fewer changeovers. We agree with you whether heating is included on stays of a month.
Flexiestays and the long winter booking
We list Milford homes on Airbnb, Booking.com and Vrbo, and also put them on Flexiestays, Bournemouth's number one platform for winter and long stays. Milford lies outside Bournemouth, so we list your home there beside our Bournemouth properties, where people searching for a few weeks on this stretch of coast already look. Flexiestays charges only 8% on the bookings it brings to a Milford home.
Rules for a longer stay
A booking that reaches 28 nights is a different thing from a holiday. It may not count towards the 70 let nights that keep the property on business rates, and if the guest lives there as their home it can become a tenancy. So we match the agreement to the stay before the guest arrives. Milford is outside the National Park, so there is no Park planning layer, but New Forest District Council's 100% second homes premium applies unless business rates do. Our guide to holiday let tax after FHL covers the income side.

The Milford on Sea letting market
A seaside village about three miles from Lymington, with a high street around a green, a long shingle beach lined with huts, and views to the Needles. Cottages, bungalows, family houses and seafront flats let to couples, walkers, birdwatchers and families. It is outside the National Park, so planning is New Forest District Council.
Milford on Sea is a village with a large year-round population and many older residents, and that is the key to its winter. Sons, daughters and grandchildren come to stay at Christmas, for birthdays and after a spell in hospital, and they need a house in the village rather than a hotel in Lymington. Those visits run from a long weekend to several weeks.
The coast does the rest. Brent geese and waders fill the Keyhaven end of the marshes from autumn, walkers take the sea wall and Hurst Spit on bright cold days, and a seafront flat with a view of the Needles is as good in a January gale as in August sun, if the windows and the heating are up to it.
Winter guests here are mostly couples and families of two generations, and they want the same few things: warmth, a parking space, step-free rooms where possible and the shops on the green within a walk.
What brings guests to Milford on Sea
- The beach and the Needles view. A long shingle beach below low cliffs, lined with beach huts, looks across the Solent to the Needles and the western Isle of Wight. Sea views and a short walk to the beach are what guests pay for.
- Hurst Castle and Hurst Spit. Henry VIII's artillery fort, now in the care of English Heritage, stands at the end of a shingle spit that guests walk along or cross to by the seasonal ferry from Keyhaven. It is the day out most visitors come for.
- Keyhaven and the marshes. Keyhaven, under a mile from the village, has a boatyard, the Hurst ferry and part of the Lymington and Keyhaven Marshes nature reserve. Birdwatchers and walkers book here in spring, autumn and winter.
- Village green and high street. The small high street fronts the village green, with cafes, pubs and shops. Guests staying a week find daily needs on foot, which helps book older couples outside the school holidays.
- Lymington and the forest. Lymington's harbour, Saturday market and Isle of Wight ferry are a short drive away, and the open New Forest lies beyond. Guests use Milford as a quieter base for both.

Full pricing and what is extraWinter let management in Milford on Sea: questions
Who books a Milford on Sea property between November and March?
Mainly people with a reason to be in the village. Families visiting older relatives are the largest group, at Christmas and whenever a parent needs help at home. Walkers and birdwatchers come for the sea wall, Hurst Spit and the Keyhaven marshes. Couples book weekends with a sea view, and remote workers and people moving to the area take a month. Lymington New Forest Hospital is about three miles away, which brings patients' families too.
Does a sea view still sell in winter?
Yes, often better than a cottage inland, because the view is the entertainment when the weather turns. Storm-watching over the Solent from a warm room is a reason to book. It only works if the room is warm: seafront flats and clifftop bungalows face the wind, so check the glazing, the seals and the heating before you market them for January, and photograph the view from inside.
Is Hurst Castle open in winter?
English Heritage opens Hurst Castle for a season that usually runs from spring to autumn, and the ferry from Keyhaven is seasonal too, so winter guests should not expect to go inside. The walk along Hurst Spit is open all year, weather permitting, and the views of the castle and the Needles are what most winter visitors come for. We say this plainly in the listing so nobody books for a closed attraction.
How long do winter stays in Milford usually last?
From a weekend to a few months. Short breaks cluster around Christmas, New Year and fine weekends. Relatives helping after an illness, people renovating a house in the village and remote workers often stay three weeks to three months. We price weekly and monthly stays separately from nightly ones, and agree in advance whether heating and electricity are included.
Can I keep Christmas for my own family?
Of course. Block it in the owner portal before we open the winter calendar, and we will let the weeks either side. Many Milford owners do exactly that and let January to March as a single long stay. Tell us early, because relatives of village residents tend to book Christmas well ahead.
What does the council charge on an empty Milford holiday home?
Milford is outside the National Park, and New Forest District Council handles both planning and council tax. Since 1 April 2025 it has charged a 100% premium on furnished homes that are no one's main residence. A property available to let for 140 nights a year and actually let for 70 is assessed for business rates instead, and winter bookings help reach those numbers. The council can tell you which regime your home falls under.
Guests on the properties we run
Excellent service from the team at sea breeze. The apartment is very well maintained and the team is available to assist whenever you need them.
Great apartment at a perfect location. Jack and the team were so easy to deal with. This is our second time at this apartment block and will definitely be returning in the not to distant future.
Lovely apartment in very close proximity to Bournemouth town centre and beach. The apartment was modern, very clean and well equipped. Onsite parking was a big bonus and once parked we didn't really need the car. We would definitely return.
